New accounts are created on durare.org. We have shut down the diaspora service at diasp.in, but XMPP service will continue. So your existing diasp.in XMPP accounts will continue to work. Due to spam, direct sign ups are disabled at the moment, but you can request an account.

Durare Terms of Service

By using any of the services provided by Durare you agree to our terms of use. These conditions can be changed at any time without prior notice. However, we highly evaluate transparency and will do our best to make sure users are notified as soon as possible about any major changes via our forum on Codema.

  1. Resource Limitations - Resources are scarce. Use Durare service with responsibility, please try not to share large chunks of files or spam. We have set a total size limit of 1GB/day/user to make sure the services are available for everyone to use.
  2. Password - If you are already logged in a client, only then you can change your password, provided your client allows it. Otherwise, you cannot change or reset your password.
  3. Legal responsibilities - As for anything else you do, be aware that Durare is not responsible for what you write, nor for the safeguard of your own privacy. We, therefore invite you to make the most of all the existing tools to defend your rights. We remind you not to upload on the site copyright protected materials that could endanger the existence of our very servers (and all services connected to it). The aim of Durare is to promote Free Software and all kind of copyleft content. Embrace it and support artists and projects that release their work under those licences. Please refer to our privacy policy to learn more about how your information is being stored and used.
  4. Refraining from certain activities - You may not engage in the following activities through the services provided by Durare:

Privacy Policy

  1. We do not read, share or sell your data. We are hosting Durare because we care about privacy on the internet. It is maintained by volunteers and funded through donations from people like you.
  2. Messages (stored on the server) will be deleted after 180 days. To keep your history intact we recommend taking a backup of your chat history through your clients.
  3. Our server is located in Finland and hosted with Hetzner based in Germany. Please refer to Hetzner's Privacy Policy for their terms and conditions.

  4. Applications like Gajim, Monocles and others support End to End Encryption (E2EE) using the OMEMO protocol. If E2EE is enabled, no one other than sender and recipients will be able to read the messages, not even the admins. You may have to manually enable encryption for each conversation in some applications. We recommend enabling E2EE for all conversations.
  5. Encryption without verifying whom you are encrypting your messages for is useless, to verify that their is no person in the middle, scanning QR codes or verifying keys through other means with the other party is recommended. Please check on the xmpp client that you are using to see how to do this.
  6. We provide and require SSL/TLS encryption on all provided services.
  7. Federation - XMPP service provided by Durare is based on Federation Protocols. This enables users signed up at different service providers to interact with each other.

What is stored?

  1. Email address - We use Formbricks to collect and verify account requests on our website. If you have any doubts on our terms of service, please contact us on diasp.in@autistici.org

Note - Along with Durare, our server also hosts XMPP services provided by Diasp.in and Poddery.com. Poddery is an initiative by FSCI, which also also offers Matrix - another decentralised instant messaging service with end to end encryption and file sharing support. Poddery’s only XMPP service is hosted on Durare’s server. The Legal notice and Privacy Policy of Durare also applies to XMPP users of Diasp.in and Podery.com. For Poddery’s Matrix service please refer to its Privacy Policy.

Although XMPP services of Durare, Diasp.in and Poddery.com are hosted on same server, new accounts are only provided on Durare. And, any disruptions to the server, like downtime, will affect all the three XMPP services.

Since this is a volunteer-run public service, it would be really helpful if you could help us maintain it. You can do so by either sponsoring this expense or a part of it, or you can also volunteer for various tasks listed at - Durare.org issues
